Bath University: OpenFlexure Con 2022

The OpenFlexure Community decided to hold their first in-person gathering of their online community in Summer 2022. I was asked to join the three day event and live illustrate summaries of each keynote speaker and the work that’s being undertaken all over the world.

Delegates could see the illustrations from their keynote speeches coming to life live over the course of the conference. Each was then digitally illustrated for use in further communications.

Their biggest priority at the moment is a collaborative project between the Universities of Bath and Cambridge (UK), Ifakara Health Institute (Bagamoyo, Tanzania), and Bongo Tech & Research Labs (Bagamoyo, Tanzania).

This aims to develop the microscope as a tool for malaria diagnostics, and has now run for nearly four years. All the microscopes used in the clinical study have been produced in Tanzania by BTech, and we have amassed a large dataset of blood smear images.

Collecting content from the various breakout rooms to add to the main illustration.

Julian Stirling gave an overview on how they can use Python to customise the microscope.

Over the course of the three days the illustrations expanded around the room, covering breakout rooms, keynotes and workshops. For this conference I used colours I currently owned, but it’s also possible to colour match to your brand colours.

After the event took place I created digital copies of the artwork in the clients colours, and size of choice! These were then shared with the attendees as a way to touch base after the event had taken place.
